Guadalajara: A Match Outside the City
SIHASO · FIFA World Cup 2026
Getting to the match in Guadalajara means a decent trip out of the city centre – the stadium is in Zapopan, about 15 km away. A relaxed matchday therefore revolves largely around how you get there and back. During the day and in the main tourist areas the city is easygoing; anything worth paying attention to mostly happens after dark and during transit. Violence against tourists is rare – it's more about not making yourself an easy target.
Getting to the stadium and back
Estadio Akron (listed as "Estadio Guadalajara" for the tournament) sits in Zapopan, about 15 km west of the centre. Your best options are the official shuttle service, the light rail Mi Tren, or the Mi Macro bus network (there's a stop right at the stadium), or Uber and DiDi. Avoid street taxis – they are the most common starting point for trouble, including express kidnappings, where you are briefly detained and driven from ATM to ATM (don't resist; your life is worth more than your money). Allow plenty of time on the way there, and after the match wait for the crowds at the stops to thin before heading back.
Entering the stadium
Expect airport-style security and a clear bag policy: one transparent bag up to 30×15×30 cm and one small hand-sized purse or wallet are permitted; opaque backpacks and large bags are not. For drinks, only one factory-sealed plastic bottle up to 590 ml is allowed – reusable and metal bottles are banned. Travel light (ticket, ID, phone, wallet, essential medication); you'll move through security faster and won't risk having items confiscated. Always check the exact rules before the match.
Nightlife on Chapultepec
Chapultepec Avenue is the heart of the city's nightlife – and therefore most of the after-dark problems. Watch your drink and never accept one from a stranger; drink spiking is a common lead-in to robbery. Stay with your group, agree on a meeting point in advance, keep cash and valuables out of sight, and don't joke about cartels or drugs. Avoid venues that stay open past normal closing hours.
Heat and water
June is hot and the sun is unforgiving. Drink only sealed bottled water, avoid tap water and ice from unknown sources, and keep hydrating throughout the day. Dehydration and heat fatigue lower your alertness – and a distracted person is an easier target.
Money and common scams
The rest is standard Mexico advice in brief. ATMs carry a risk of card skimming and forced withdrawals – use machines inside banks or shopping centres, keep your daily limit low, and consider a separate card with a small balance (a physical card is required for ATM withdrawals). Pickpockets and distraction tricks are common in crowds and on public transport: if someone suddenly grabs your attention, reach for your belongings first. Exchange money only at banks or official exchange offices. Watch out for fake police officers – a genuine fine is never paid in cash on the street, so any demand for cash on the spot is a warning sign; don't offer a bribe, and ask for a written ticket and for the matter to be resolved at a station.
Virtual kidnapping
A phone scam in which nobody is actually being held. The caller keeps you on the line, issues threats (sometimes impersonating a cartel to frighten you) and pressures you to pay immediately – by transfer, top-up or gift card codes, or by withdrawing cash from an ATM. There is also a hotel version: a call comes through to your room demanding you move elsewhere – not purely for money, but to cut you off from your surroundings and prevent you from verifying anything. Real kidnappers don't call ahead, so receiving the call at all is proof of a scam. Slow down, verify from a second phone, don't pay anything, and hang up; agree on a code word with family before you travel.
Before you go
A few things worth sorting out before you leave home:
Czech Embassy (Mexico City, covers all of Mexico): Cuvier 22, Colonia Polanco · +52 555 531 25 44 / +52 555 531 27 77 · Czech MFA website.
Before travelling, register in the DROZD system and save your insurer's details, accommodation address, an emergency contact at home, and photos of your documents on your phone.
